Obituary

Avis Marie McIntyre, 87, passed away with her daughters by her side on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Calais Community Hospital.  Avis was born in Baileyville on July 26, 1935, daughter of Walter and Reta (O’Neill) King.

After graduating from St. Croix High School, Class of 1952, Avis moved to Connecticut to work for Pratt & Whitney, initially as a grinder and later as the secretary for the foreman.  She eventually moved home to Baileyville and married Leroy Martin on June 12, 1954.  Avis moved to Florida with her daughter Nancy, where she started her career as a C.N.A.  She worked as a private duty nurse and also for various hospitals.  In 1995 she returned home and worked for Eastern Area Agency on Aging as well as a private duty nurse in people’s homes, retiring in 2015.  Avis was a member of People’s United Methodist Church, Calais American Legion Auxiliary Unit #3, charter member of Calais Lioness, and was a volunteer for Senior Companions.  She enjoyed being around her family and enjoyed watching her grandkids and friends playing sports and was their biggest fan.  She also enjoyed cooking, baking, traveling, casinos, fishing, boat rides, reading the Calais Advertiser, and especially loved her sweets.

In addition to her parents, Avis was predeceased by her first husband and best friend, Leroy Martin; daughter Karen Church; son Glenn Martin; daughter-in-law Laura Lee Martin; grandsons Chad Casey and Jason Martin; and her sister Marilyn MacArthur.  Surviving are her children, Janet Johnson and husband Stephen of Baileyville, Nancy McIntyre and companion Stephen Lincoln of Baileyville, and Debbie Polzun of CT; grandchildren, Brent Martin and companion Sally of MN, Monica Martin of Portland, Heather Martin and companion Shane of Baileyville, Adam Casey of Baileyville, Ryan Lincoln and wife Meghan of Waltham, Damon Lincoln and companion Kathleen of Bangor, Stephen Lincoln Jr. and wife Alexa of Bucksport, Stephen Johnson Jr. and wife Joan of Machias, and Priscilla Ashby of Machias; great-grandchildren, J.D. McLaughlin, Charlee-Anne, Caroline, and Stephen Lincoln III, Allison, Grace, Stephen III, and Giselle Johnson, James Anthony and wife Carol, and Destiny and Chandler Floyd, great-great grandchildren, Beau and Valor; her “adopted grandson” Dennis Tomah III; and nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 27, 2023, at the Woodland Cemetery, Ryan Rd., Baileyville.  Following the service, a gathering will be held at the American Legion in Baileyville.  Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
