In Loving Memory of Annabelle M. Bassett.

July 29, 1943 - September 25, 2026

It is with profound sadness and deep love that we remember Annabelle Bassett, the youngest of her ten siblings, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, godmother, sister, auntie, cousin, and cherished friend. Annabelle's life was defined by her love for family, her community, animals, cooking, and the many people whose lives she touched.

Annabelle was born on July 29, 1943, and grew up in Sipayik, Pleasant Point, Perry, Maine. Her Passamaquoddy heritage and connection to her community were an important and treasured part of her life. She especially cherished spending time at the reservation with her relatives and attending the annual Passamaquoddy Powwow, where family, tradition, culture, and community came together. These traditions created memories that she carried with her throughout her life.

One of the greatest parts of Annabelle's life was her connection to the Passamaquoddy language. Speaking the language, teaching it, and sharing it with others was something she carried with great pride. To her, the language was more than words-it was a connection to our ancestors, our culture, our family, and the generations who came before us.

She understood that a language carries the stories, traditions, wisdom, and spirit. By speaking Passamaquoddy and teaching it to others, she helped keep those traditions alive. She gave younger generations the opportunity to hear the language, learn its meaning, and understand the importance of carrying it forward.

Annabelle dedicated more than 20 years of her working life to Bank of America, where she began as a bank teller and went on to become Head Teller, a position she proudly held for more than two decades. She was dedicated to her work and, most importantly, to the people she met along the way.

But Annabelle's greatest pride was her family.

She was the loving mother of Russell Bassett, Sandra Bassett, and Karen Flaherty (Bassett), and the late April Bassett, whom she carried in her heart always.

She was a devoted grandmother to Danny, Melissa, Key-Arnna, Harley, Kaleigh, and Joseph, and a loving great-grandmother to Jovanni, Lorenzo, Evelyn, Darien, and Bronson.

To her family, Annabelle was more than a mother or grandmother. She was a source of love, stories, laughter, comfort, and memories that will be carried forward for generations.

Annabelle was also a true animal lover. She had a special compassion for animals and found joy in caring for them. She was equally passionate about people. She loved being surrounded by family and friends and had a genuine ability to make people feel welcomed and cared for.

Anyone who knew Annabelle knew that she was also a wonderful cook. Food was one of the ways she expressed her love. Her kitchen and her table were places where people gathered, shared stories, laughed, and made memories. The meals she prepared will be remembered not only for how delicious they were, but for the love behind them.

Annabelle leaves behind a legacy of family, love, heritage, tradition, kindness, and connection. Her life touched many people, and her absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.

Though our hearts are heavy, we can find comfort knowing that the love Annabelle gave so freely will continue through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and all those who carry her memory with them.

Her stories will be told.

Her traditions will continue.

Her recipes will be remembered.

Her love will live on.

Annabelle will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

As Annabelle begins her final journey, her family finds comfort in knowing that her spirit returns to the land she knew and loved. The land of Pleasant Point, her ancestral home, and the community that shaped so much of her life will forever be a part of her story. May her soul find peace among the land, waters, and people she held close to her heart, and may her connection to her ancestors and those who came before her continue beyond this life.

May she rest peacefully, surrounded forever by the love she gave so freely to others.

Visitation will begin 10 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2026, at 5 Sweetgrass Lane, Perry, until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 30. Following the visitation on Wednesday, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Joseph Lukong 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 51 Washington St., Eastport.
