Ada Cooper Smith

April 12, 1934 — April 24, 2022

Calais - Ada Elena Smith, a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend passed away on April 24, 2022.

Ada was born to Kathleen and Wallace Cooper in Bayonne NJ, on April 12, 1934. After high school, she trained to be a secretary at Katherine Gibbs School. Ada fell in love and married Andrew Zozom, and they raised eight children. After moving to West Milford (NJ) Ada went to William Patterson College part-time at night to become a special education teacher. She continued her education and earned an MS in Learning Disabilities. Ada loved teaching and taught until retiring in 1996. After divorcing, Ada married Charles Smith in 1980 and moved to Jefferson NY. Widowed in 2009, Ada moved to Maine in 2018.

Ada was predeceased by her parents, sister Maryann Bram, children Elizabeth Zozom, Tammy Kemp, and Derrick Kemp, grandson Matthew Wilson, and her husband. She is survived by her twin sister Suzanne Thayer, children Suzanne Bryan, Jennifer Gillies, Kathleen Wilson, Andrew Zozom and Darold Kemp, stepchildren Albert Smith, Joyce Smith and Donna Tuason, grandchildren Katie Melancon, Eric Bryan, and Matthew Zozom-Humes, and great-granddaughter Emma Melancon.

Ada loved being with family and friends and with her beloved pets. She loved to laugh, was always busy, and was more than a little mischievous. She was an avid sewer and crafter, and especially enjoyed making things for others. Ada spent many happy hours in fellowship with the Jehovah’s Witness congregations wherever she lived. She was exceptionally creative and spirited, and never let her battle with dementia diminish the richness of her days.

A private memorial service for Ada will be held at a later date. Ada’s family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff at Union Village Assisted Living Home in Calais for the loving care they gave her. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
