Obituary for Winnifred Demmons

Winnie passed away at Calais Regional Hospital on June 24th with her family by her side. As heartbreaking as this is for those who remain, we believe there is rejoicing in heaven at her arrival.

Mom was born July 13, 1934 in Cooper to Leona Flood Keen and Horace Keen. She attended schools in Cooper, Calais and Machias graduating from Washington Academy Class of 1952. Winnie and Warren married on September 23, 1952 and enjoyed 46 years of marriage raising 7 children together. Mom worked as a child care provider early on allowing her to be home for her own and numerous other children, and later retired from Hardwick’s after more than 20 years employment there.

One of Mom’s favorite pastimes was crafting. There are many, many quilts in the family lovingly put together and gifted throughout the years. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting and would eagerly attempt to add new skills to her repertoire. She was hands down the best fudge maker ever and her whoopie pies are legendary.

Mom was predeceased by both her parents, brothers, Wayne, Frederick and Francis and brother-in law David Burke. She is survived by her children Joyce Scott of Calgary, Alberta, Jo-Anne Moffatt and husband Peter of Oak Bay, NB, Gerald Demmons and wife Pat of Conway, South Carolina, Jeff Demmons and wife Kathy of Calais, John Demmons and wife Tina of Baileyville, Joel Demmons and wife Debbie of Calais and Joanie Demmons of Calais, 44 Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, Brothers Philip Keen and his wife Sandy of Florida, Rick and wife Judy of Maryland, Sisters Jean Kelly and husband Jim of Holden and Ginny Burke of Calais, sister in law Betty Ahlquist of Scarborough, brother-in-law Lester Greenlaw of Scarborough, and sister-in-law Ruth Keen of Florida along with many loved nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 27th at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A celebration of Mom’s life will be held 1:00 p.m., Thursday, June 28th at Second Baptist Church, 21 Church Street, Calais, burial will follow at West Ridge Cemetery in Cooper. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
