Obituary for Phillip Alan Kelly

Calais – Phillip Alan Kelly, 66, passed away surrounded by family on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Phil was born in Calais on January 13, 1953, son of George and Madeline (Hooper) Kelly.

Phil graduated from Calais Memorial High School, Class of 1972, and soon after started his career with Lane Construction, which he worked for 47 years. Initially a laborer, he worked his way up to be a Screed Operator. Phil loved his job and took great pride in his accomplishments. He enjoyed socializing, keeping his lawn meticulous, music, and above all, spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

Phil’s greatest accomplishment might have been something he didn’t know, which was making everyone around him feel so loved. He loved telling stories, and those who met him always felt happier for it. He didn’t have much money, but always gave what he had to others whom he felt needed it more. Phil’s heart was so big that even those who met him only for one visit were changed only for the better forever. One of his last wishes was to continue working (paving roads and construction) just to provide for his family. He was the most selfless, kind, and generous man, and his character was above any. Phil’s genuine smile and loving nature made you feel so special and loved, no matter the age or social status. He had simple rules; love God, don’t be afraid to show your love to those around you, hug often, laugh, tell your family how proud you are of them, provide for others, love animals, and work hard. He didn’t have to drill rules into the minds of his children, he just led by example. Phil made his children the people they are today and they will be forever thankful.

Phil is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Patricia (Sloan) Kelly; two children, Jennifer Kelly and Tony Newell of Indian Township, and LCDR Ryan Kelly and wife Kari of Naval Station Newport, RI; his three grandchildren, Kiarra and Chayeden Newell, and Finley Kelly; two sisters, Patricia Pike and husband Wayne of Baileyville, and Angela Foggia and husband Mike of Baring; mother-in-law Janet Sloan of McAdam, NB; three brothers-in-law, James Sloan and wife Pierrette of Moncton, NB, Stephen Sloan and wife Rose of McAdam, NB, and David Sloan of Fort McMurray, AB; two sisters-in-law, Judy Astorino and husband Mike of McAdam, NB, and Janet Folland and husband Mike of McAdam, NB; nieces and nephews, Shannon Fader, Erin Pike, Kacey Pike and Jana Knowles; special cousins, Michael, Teresa, Jimmy, Wayne, Nancy, Debbie, Vicki, Ralph, Stephen, Paula, Pete, Kenny and David; numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends; and his two feline companions, Mack and Natty.

A celebration of Phil’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais.
