Obituary for Paul Spear

Calais – Paul Francis Spear, 77, passed away at his home on February 20, 2019. Paul was born to Roy Spear and Marjorie (O’Neil) Bailey in St. Stephen, New Brunswick on July 2, 1941. He grew up in Calais where he lived with his grandparents Bernard and Martha O’Neil and graduated from Calais High School. He then went on to attend Holy Rosary Commercial School in St. Stephen.

Paul spend a short time with Georgia Pacific in Baileyville before changing paths and taking a position at Maine Central Railroad where he eventually retired after many years of service. Paul was a private and reserved man, he loved animals and enjoyed a regular routine that included a daily ride around Calais at 4:00 pm on the dot. He was a huge fan of any New England sports team, particularly the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots and Bruins but also a Notre Dame Football enthusiast, he had fond memories of traveling with his son, John, to attend one of their games.

As a young man Paul was proud to have volunteered on the Calais Fire Department. He was a devoted parishioner at Immaculate Conception RC Church in Calais but would often attend church in St. Stephen as well.

In addition to both his parents and his grandparents, Paul was predeceased by his Brother, William Bailey and a brother-in-law, Jim Scullin.

He will be remembered by his two sons, Daniel Spear and his companion Dawn McIver of Calais and John Spear and his companion, Amy Hold of Baileyville; three grandsons, Nathan, Mitchel and Mason Spear; a great grandson, Caleb Spear; his sister, Catherine Scullin; his niece Jessica Bailey and nephew, Jamie Scullin.

A memorial mass will be celebrated by Father J. Kevin Martin at 11:00 am, Thursday, February 28th at Immaculate Conception RC Church, Calais. Committal will be later in the spring at Calais Cemetery.
