Eastport - Joseph Schofield died of sudden heart failure at his home on Water Street in Eastport, Maine on Sunday, January 26, 2020. Joseph Vincent Schofield was the son of Robert Francis Schofield and Esther Louise (Ludwig) Schofield of Connecticut. Joe was born in Harlingen, Texas on April 14,1962.

Joey made his home Eastport in the1990’s. He loved Maine, Eastport, and its people. During his time in Eastport, Joe was a restaurateur, a fisherman, and most importantly, the owner of his business, Sunrise Painters, which he ran for decades in Eastport. Joe prided himself on using traditional hand brush painting methods. Joe took pride in the quality of work on the many homes and businesses he painted over the years. Joey was known for his great joy of life and friendly character. He was curious and interested in everything. Joe gave encouragement and compliments to everyone, including total strangers.

Joe adored his partner Sheila Lank and their son Jaxson. Sheila and Jaxson were the love of Joe’s life. After Jaxson was born Joe said he felt like a kid again. Together Sheila and Joe wanted to make sure they shared “the fun factor” with their son. When they weren’t at their jobs, Joe and Sheila and Jaxson would travel all over the northeast visiting family. Joey would say that whenever they went to hotels it must have a swimming pools for the “Jaxsonator” as he and the whole family loved water and swimming.

Joey’s love of his fellow man was bigger than life. He loved his family dearly. He loved to talk and to make people laugh. He loved all kinds of music and dancing. Joe was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Joey would say he wanted to think the best of people and had great faith in them to do well. Joey also would talk about how he had a great faith in God’s plan. Eastport was Joe’s home. He was known and loved by so many.

Joseph is survived his partner Sheila Grace Lank and their son, Jaxson Edward Schofield and Sheila’s daughter Stevey-Rae; siblings, Janet Coxon and her husband Michael, Robert Schofield Jr., Jean Schofield, Ellen Russell and her husband Thomas, Susan Schofield, Paul Schofield, Patricia Collins and her husband Michael, Thomas Schofield, John Schofield and his wife Dawn, and Lorraine Taylor and her husband Cary; nephews and nieces, Aaron Bock, Anna Bock Bastien and husband Perlo, Chris Coxon and partner Cassie, Michele Haigh and her son Xavier, Jason and his wife Claudia Slaver, Chase Schofield and his wife Erin, Barbara and her husband Lance St Jean, Paul Schofield Jr., Jacqui Marx, Sky and his wife Courtney Schofield, Shaw Schofield, Shannon, Patrick Russell, Jordan Slaver, Rosanna Stewart, and Justin Knight and all the extended family he acquired when Sheila became part of his life.

In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his brother, Eddie Schofield.

A funeral service for Joe will begin 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Shead High School, 89 High St., Eastport with Tessa Ftorek officiating. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.

Joe was a person of remarkable character in the face of adversity. I had the privilege of his acquaintance during the years my wife and I were summer residents of Eastport. I shall never forget him, nor his smiling face. My condolences especially to Sheila at his passing. We are all diminished by it.

To all of Joe's family and cherished friends: May the God of Hope give you the fullness of peace, and may the Lord of Life always be with you. Joe was a wonderful man and a very hard worker. We met a few years ago when I asked him to do some work for us at St. Joseph's Church in Eastport. He and his crew did a phenomenal job, and so when it came time for another place to be refurbished, we called upon Sunrise Painters to restore our church at St. John's in Pembroke as well. They did a super job! I enjoyed meeting Joe and his crew very much. He will be deeply missed by all. + Eternal rest grant unto Joe, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen
