Obituary for George A. Moreshead

Baring – George A. Moreshead, 98, went home to be with the Lord after a brief illness on January 13, 2019 at Calais Regional Hospital. George was born in Baring to Herbert and Mildred (Jordon) Moreshead on January 8, 1921. As a young man he attended local schools until the needs of his family proved to outweigh his high school career, he began helping his parents support the family as a young man and never lost his incredible work ethic.

George married Thelma Doten in Baring and together they packed up and moved to Massachusetts for work and to be closer to his sisters. He found a job building Navy ships in a shipyard in Hingham, MA but soon after was drafted by the US Army. He was deployed to Europe where he proudly served his country and returned home a WWII Combat Veteran.

George and Thelma eventually moved back to Baring and he began working with Georgia Pacific in Baileyville. He was not only a dedicated employee but was an extremely hard worker, he retired after 32 years of service. George was a member of the Quarter Century Club, the Alexander Grange and was a devoted Christian, he was also a member of the Second Baptist Church in Calais.

He was a skilled carpenter who could fix just about anything, a wonderful cook, and he grew an impressive vegetable garden each year that fed most of Baring, along with his breads, whoopie pies, cookies and many other treats. After Thelma fell ill with a stroke, he never doubted his decision to care for her at home for the next 8 years until her passing in 2006. George loved the Lord and led his family by example. He was self-sufficient up until just four days before his passing.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Thelma; his son George N. Moreshead; a granddaughter, Patricia Lee Moreshead and twelve siblings, including a special sister, Ethel Fitzpatrick.

George is survived by his children, Sandra Sherrard and her husband John of Calais and Jerry Moreshead of Meddybemps; four grandchildren, Kelly McCoubrey and her husband Peter of Meddybemps, Jerri-Mae Ross and her husband Jim of FL, Michael Sherrard and his wife Morgan and Christopher Sherrard and his wife Rene, all of Calais; nine great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Rachel Hamilton of Baileyville.

Donations in George’s memory many be made to The Second Baptist Church, 21 Church St., Calais, ME 04619 or a charity of one’s choice. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until noon on Thursday just prior to a funeral service that will begin at 12:00 noon, Thursday, January 17th at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. Committal will follow at Baring Cemetery.
