Obituary for Ella Annie Arseneau

Baileyville – Ella A. Arseneau, 100, died Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at a Calais hospital. Ella was born in Berlin, N.H., August 1, 1905, daughter of the late Andrew and Marie A. (Coran) Arseneau. She was educated in Woodland and graduated from nursing school in Calais in 1920. Ella and her best friend, the late Melva Miles, worked in Boston two years before returning to Woodland. She worked at the Calais Regional Hospital and did special nursing before going to work for over 38 years at St. Croix Paper Co. as the Mill Nurse. Ella has always been very active in town activities and after retiring from her job, she volunteered at the elementary school in the Reading Program. She was a member of St. James the Greater R.C. Church in Baileyville, for which she was so proud. Ella served as a Sunday School Teacher and Lector and was a member of Ladies Sodality, attending her last meeting on September 14. Ella’s goal in life was to help celebrate the 100 years for her church and her 100th birthday, which she was able to achieve. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Arthur and Rev. Andrew Arseneau; and sisters, Melvina (Vina) White and Sister Loretta (Harriet); and friend Marie Tewhey, who Ella considered a sister. Surviving are her adopted nieces, Mary White and Paula Johnson and family, Janice and Dwight Ferry and family, Ann and Richard Miles; very special friends, Rev. Brian Blanchette, Rita McLaughlin, Gloria Lanigan, Cleo Seavey, Gail and Jim Moffitt, Sue, Jim and Ashley Oliver, Bernice and Alice Jean Robinson, Sally Seavey, and Arlene Barnard; and many other friends who have been so very special to her. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, September 29, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:45 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Brian Blanchette and Father Frank Morin 11 a.m. Friday at St. James the Greater R.C. Church in Baileyville. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery, Baileyville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James the Greater R.C. Church, PO Box 369, Baileyville, ME 04694, or a charity of one’s choice.
