Obituary

Lubec – Edwin E. Knight, 87, passed away October 10, 2019 after a short stay at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Bangor. Born on August 17, 1932, he was the twin son of Edwin Sr. and Matilda (Smith) Knight of Wethersfield, CT.

Eddie attended Wethersfield schools, graduating from Wethersfield High School, Class of 1950. He lived most of his life in Wethersfield, CT, moving to Lubec upon retirement.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a Sergeant 1st Class. He was in the 1st and 8th Army, 2nd Infantry Division, 23rd Battalion, Charlie Company; 2nd Platoon, 1st Squad. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Citation, and most recently, awarded the Korean President’s Ambassador of Peace Medal. As a result of his service, he struggled with PTSD on and off throughout his life.

He worked his whole life as a master mechanic. He retired from Millane Nurseries in Cromwell, CT, where he managed their garage as a heavy construction mechanic for over 20 years. He retired to Lubec, his wife Cathy’s hometown. They have been spending their winters in Melbourne, FL for several years.

Eddie was a Lifetime member of the Wethersfield Cove Yacht Club as Past Commodore, Korean War Veterans Association in Windsor, CT, and the Stuart Post #65 American Legion in Lubec.

Among his many hobbies were deep sea fishing with his buddies, woodworking, gardening and restoring old tractors. He also restored a 1948 U.S. Army Willys jeep, which he proudly displayed in the 4th of July parades in Lubec. Eddie was well known for being able to fix anything. A great storyteller, he was well known for his embellishments each time the story was told.

He especially enjoyed the summer visits with his children, grandchildren and many friends.

Eddie is survived by his loving wife Cathy (Wyman); two daughters, Linda and husband John Kehoe, and Katherine Knight, and their mother, Nanette; step-son Lenny Cox; grandchildren, Johnny, William, Kevin and Joseph Kehoe, and Tyler, Nicholas and Kaitlyn Cox and their mother, Karen; sisters-in-law, Nancy Strayer, Susan Hynson, Ethel Mahany, and Dorothy Henry and their families. He will also be missed by his cat and napping buddy, Jake. In addition to his parents, Eddie was predeceased by his twin brother Burton.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2019 at the Split Hill Cemetery in West Lubec. Following the service, a fellowship will be held at the Mary S. Pike Hall at Christian Temple Church, Main St., Lubec. In lieu of flowers, donations in Eddie’s memory may be made to Save Our Strays (SOS), 67 Water St., Lubec, ME 04652.
