Obituary for Charles Edward Leighton Jr.

Baileyville – Charles Edward Leighton Jr., 58, passed away at his home with his family by his side on Saturday, September 4, 2010, following a courageous battle with cancer. Charlie was born in Calais on January 6, 1952, son of the late Charles and Miriam (Woolf) Leighton. After attending the Baileyville area school, he worked in the woods for Georgia Pacific, Murray LaPlant and currently was a millwright with Domtar. On October 4, 1969, he married Janet Lewis in St. Stephen, N.B. Charlie was a Master Maine Guide and owned and operated Bonney Brook Guide Service, specializing in bear hunting. He was a member of the Spednic Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing, four wheeling, working with his tractor and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Surviving are his loving wife of 40 years, Janet Leighton; three children, Lisa Howland and her husband Shawn of Baileyville, Marilyn Roderick and her husband Lee of Meddybemps, and Charles Leighton III and his wife Billie-Jo of Baileyville; three grandchildren, Andrew and Ian Howland, and Carlie Leighton; two step-grandchildren, Mallory and Alex Roderick; his sister Pam Oakes and her husband Lloyd of Baileyville; brother Stephen Leighton and his companion Charlotte of Baileyville; mother-in-law Eileen Lewis; special friends Carl, Rick, Bo, Joey and Kenny, many nieces and nephews; and his special canine companion, Misty. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 7 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A celebration of Charlie’s life will be held in the funeral home 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery.
