Obituary for Basil Stephen LaCoote Sr.

Indian Township – Basil Stephen LaCoote Sr., 75, passed away peacefully at his home on September 14, 2014 surrounded by his family. Basil was born to Archie and Leona (Socoby) LaCoote on January 3, 1939 in Indian Township where he grew up and later served as Tribal Lieutenant Governor and also as a Tribal Counselor. Basil worked for many years at Georgia Pacific paper mill in Woodland and several other jobs for the Passamaquoddy Tribe. He could often be found fishing on the bridge between Princeton and Indian Township as it was one of his favorite pastimes along with spending time with his wife and family. In addition to his parents, Basil was predeceased by his wife, Grace (Gabriel) LaCoote; his brothers, Arnold and Lawrence LaCoote and sister, Jane Tinker. He will be sadly missed by his five sons, Michael LaCoote and his wife Chevy, Basil LaCoote Jr., Archie LaCoote II, Daniel LaCoote and his fiance Stacey, all of Indian Township and Stephen LaCoote of Skowhegan; eight grandchildren, Kelsey, with whom he shared a very special bond, Michael Jr., Gabriel, Zachary, Malsom “Bunk”, Daniel Jr. Leona and Jordan LaCoote; many nieces, nephews and cousins and his two canine companions Spike and Baby. Visitation will be held at Basil’s home, 324 US Route 1, Indian Township, beginning at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 16th until 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 18th. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m., Thursday September 18th at St. Anne’s Parish, Peter Dana Point with Deacon Rick Doyle officiating. Burial will take place at Tribal Cemetery.
