Obituary for Arlo Irving Smith

Perry – Arlo Irving Smith, 70, passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston following a courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Arlo was born in Harrington on October 20, 1946, son of the late Eugene and Helen (McHatton) Smith.

After graduating from Harrington High School, Class of 1965, he attended Washington State College in Machias where he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Education in 1969. While attending college, he met his love, Bonita Williams, and they were united in marriage on August 23, 1969. Arlo started his teaching career at Clark Elementary School in Perry where he eventually became the working Principal. In 1989, the new school was built in Perry and Arlo continued his career as a working Principal until his retirement in 2013.

He was a fraternal brother of Kappa Mu Alpha, a member and Past Master of Crescent Lodge No. 78, A.F. & A.M. in Pembroke, Royal Arch, Knights Templar, and Anah Temple Shrine in Bangor. Arlo was an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan, and was a member of IAABO Chapter of High School Officials. He also was a little league coach for several years and enjoyed going to his Thursday Night Card Club with some of his closest friends.

In addition to his parents, Arlo was predeceased by an infant son Toby; and a sister Marie Murphy. Surviving are his loving wife of 47 years, Bonnie Smith; two sons, Jason Smith and wife Tracy of Sidney, and Ryan Smith and wife Jinene of West Palm Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Nathaniel Smith of Sidney, Danielle Brady and husband Alex of Minot, ND, Gabriel Smith of Sidney, and Riley Smith of West Palm Beach, FL; a sister Rebecca Atwater of Unionville; a brother Dean Smith and wife Gloria of Hermon; two sisters-in-law, Gloria Ladd and husband Lincoln of Wayne, and Roxanne Bussell and husband Gary of Skowhegan; two brothers-in-law Jeffrey Williams and wife Joellen of Las Vegas, NV, and James Williams and wife Margaret of Hallowell; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

The family would like to thank the Lung Team, Doctors and Nurses at Brigham & Womens Hospital in Boston for their loving care and going above and beyond.

A celebration of Arlo’s life will be held 3:00 p.m., Saturday, June 3rd at Perry Elementary School, Route 1, Perry. A private burial will be held in Restlawn Cemetery, Perry. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
