John was a great guy whom I have known for many years. we have had many laughs together, some in which he found far more humor in something he had said than I did!But he always had something to say to make me smile. my thoughts and prayers are with you all in this difficult time ...

Now is not to wonder why, now is the time to celebrate the life. Uncle John will always be part of my memories mostly from the campsite in Oromoto. We would play horseshoes and at night cards around a big ole table, 31 was the game and if you had three dimes in your pocket you could play. Uncle John was a pistol full of life during those days. I will always remember the good times at the camp. My deepest sympathy to Aunt Teenie, cousins Lynn, Jon, Kathy, Shawn and their families.

Chick and Marylou Barnes

Katrine and Family, sorry for your loss. Chick and I will never forget how a friendly and considerate person John was. We remember the first time we met him and how comfortable he made us feel. He was very outgoing and pleasant to be around. I don't know if you remember this or not, but we was at a supper and I couldn't find my bowl and he said he was mad that someone took it. A little while later he brought me my bowl.. He said he took it and put it in his car because he thought it was his. That was so funny.I never forgot that or the both of you. Take care!

I was very saddened to learn of your recent loss. Although I've only seen Johnny (what we used to call him as kids) once or twice over the past 50 years or so, you should know that he is in large part responsible for my being here today!

Many years ago, when I was about 11 or 12 and my family lived in Vanceboro, I attempted to swim across a narrow part of Spednik Lake, just above where the St. Croix River begins. A bunch of boys were throwing mudballs at my girlfriend and me, so I decided to swim across to the Canadian side. It didn't look far, and though the water was smooth on the surface, there was a strong undercurrent. About halfway across, I found that I was too tired to get to the other side and was quickly being carried toward the dam below!

I began to thrash around. Soon, as they say, "My life passed before my eyes," and I mentally read a newspaper story about my death, truly thinking I was going to drown.

But Johnny and a friend (a grandson of our beloved schoolteacher Amy McIver's, I think) saw what was happening and put in a boat (a canoe?) from the Canadian side. Somehow they dragged me into it without tipping over and took me back to the American shore, badly shaken but very grateful!

I was scared by the incident and even more worried about getting into trouble with my parents for doing such a foolish thing. We kids were all upset about the incident, so very little was said about about it afterwards -- though my brother did eventually hear about it.

I thought you would want to know about Johnny's quick thinking and decisive action that day long ago, in case he never mentioned it. I'll always be grateful, because were it not for him, neither I nor my five children and three lovely grandchildren would be here today. It's just one way in which he changed the world for the better.

All I can say is "Thanks, Johnny, and forever thanks!"
